Have you ever watched your child playing and wondered what’s actually happening behind those smiles and giggles? While it looks like simple play, your child’s brain is actually undergoing a massive construction project.
At Overton Music Studios, we use research-based curricula to nurture the "whole child." Because music engages nearly every area of the brain simultaneously, it is one of the most powerful tools we have to support early childhood development!
Here is how we are building better brains together, from birth through age eight.
🩷Babies: Wiring for Communication
You aren't just singing lullabies; you're laying the groundwork for literacy. When you engage in vocal play and responsive singing, you are strengthening your baby's auditory pathways.
The Brain Benefit: Every time you mirror your baby’s coos or pause for them to "respond" in a song, you are hard-wiring their brain for turn-taking and complex communication. You are literally teaching them the rhythm of conversation before they can even speak a word.
🩵Toddlers: Flexing those "Math Muscles"
Your toddler is naturally obsessed with patterns and sequences. In class, we lean into this by exploring steady beats and repeated rhythmic motifs.
The Brain Benefit: Recognizing that a "drum-drum-clap" repeats is actually the earliest form of algebraic thinking. By engaging the part of the brain responsible for logical reasoning, we are building those "math muscles" one beat at a time.
💜Preschoolers: The Executive Function Lab
As children grow, we "level up" the musical challenge. Our preschool activities often involve "Stop and Go" games or following multi-step musical instructions.
The Brain Benefit: These activities are perfect for developing inhibitory control and working memory. This helps preschoolers learn how to regulate their impulses and focus on tasks- essential skills for a successful transition to "big kid" school.
💚Kindermusik Musicians: Multi-Sensory Mastery
The oldest studio students (ages 5–8) take on the ultimate brain workout: multi-track processing. In these classes, students might be reading notation while moving their bodies or playing an instrument.
The Brain Benefit: This requires the left and right hemispheres of the brain to work in perfect tandem. This "whole-brain" engagement improves neuroplasticity, which aids in everything from emotional regulation to advanced problem-solving in everyday life.
🧠The BIG Picture: Music is a biological powerhouse! When you make music with your child at Overton Music Studios, you aren’t just making memories- you’re building a stronger foundation for all future learning.
Ready to see the science in action? We invite you to join our community of families in Omaha. Whether you have a newborn or an energetic eight-year-old, we have a research-based class designed just for them.
